In this article, I will walk you through the basics of how to start a blog, and answer some basic technical questions that many newbies have that needed answers to get their first blog up and running.

Whether you want to start blogging for a hobby, as a side gig or for a full-time online business, there are some challenges that you may face if you are unsure of where to start.

When I started blogging in 2009, I was faced with the challenge of developing my own website. I didn’t have those technical skills to do it on my own, so I had to pay someone to do it for me. I also didn’t have the time to allocate on those areas of blogging as I was busy with work and with my family.

Fast forward today…blogging has never been as less technical as today as there are so many platforms and templates to choose from that has step by step guide to follow. All you need is time, patience, determination, and hard work.

How To Start Blogging For Beginners

Here Are The Simple Steps To Follow That You Will Need In Order To Start Blogging:

  1. Pick a niche
  2. Select a blogging platform.
  3. Think of a domain name and get hosting in place.
  4. Configure and Design your site.
  5. Learn about keyword search.
  6. Start creating content that will help readers.

Through this post, I’ll walk you through the process of how I approached each step when I started blogging and suggests some tips and recommendations that will be helpful on other important topics like choosing a niche, finding readers for your blog, building community with your blog, and thinking about how to make money from it, etc.

My aspiration is that these steps will guide you in starting your first blog which will lead to your success no matter what direction you take with your blogging.

So, let’s begin…

Step 1. Pick a niche

We are surrounded by a multitude of niches. Different individuals have different topics that they like to share, subjects they want to talk about and interests that they would like to pursue.

According to Wikipedia, a niche is denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.

Niche will enable you to target group of viewers that will be following you or will be your audience as you consistently create valuable content that is meant to answer their questions or to inform them in a useful way.

To help you pick your niche, consider if your passion, interests, hobby or anything that you want your blogging to be focused on is something that you can write about for a long time.

It should be THE topic that you can create valuable content for your potential viewers consistently. For whatever direction you would like to take your blogging to, it is still very important for your content to be of high quality as there is no sense in blogging and creating a website if no one will read them.

Step 2. Select a blogging platform

In order to start a blog, you’ll need to select a blogging platform which is a tool that helps you to get your content up onto the web.

Nowadays, there are many blogging platforms available but as for me, the choice is clear and simple. I would set up straight away on Wealthy Affiliate platform, and I highly recommend you do too.

Wealthy Affiliate is by far the most popular blogging platform and that is for a lot of good reasons.

  • It is free to join the platform in which you can also create a website for free that will be good for 6 months (that’s a lot of savings, isn’t it?). But, if you decide to continue and choose to become a premium member ( which has several benefits compared to a free user) you do need to make a small investment for membership, domain, and hosting.
  • It has 1.3 seconds of excellent site speed rating. Meaning they have a unique brilliant “load limiting” process that will monitor your websites and make sure they are always running optimally.
  • It is easy to set up.
  • It has been around for many years and is a robust and secure system.
  • Support is always available 24 Hours all over the world. If something goes wrong in the technical aspects of your website or if you need help on how to deal with any issues when they come up and If you accidentally break your website, they can help.
  • They offer 3000+ templates that you can choose from.
  • The best feature and my favorite is the training and education at Wealthy Affiliate. The moment that you join you are going to be walked through their state of the art, step by step training platform. Being a newbie you will learn how to create a successful website that is meant to last within the online space.
  • Plus several other features that by far are better than other platforms. Click here, if you want to find out more about Wealthy Affiliate platform.

Step 3. Think of a domain name and get hosting in place

Choose a domain

The next step of starting your blog is choosing a domain name which is going to be your blog’s address so that you have a home for your blog online. is my domain name. Each and every blog needs its own domain name. So, choose a few names related to your niche and find one that isn’t taken!

Wealthy Affiliate has a SiteDomains platform that will instantly allow you to uncover any domain in seconds. This feature will make your domain research easier and faster. It is amazing how they uncover some true domain gems out there.

The following are what each domain needs which Wealthy Affiliate offers:

  • Full access to emails.
  • Full privacy and domain protect.
  • Full email accounts included with each domain purchase.
  • You don’t have to worry about being sold on various upsells or being charged more in subsequent years like other domain registrars.
  • With SiteDomains you have everything included all in one place…at ONE price which is $13.99/year.

Set up your blog hosting with Wealthy Affiliate

The simplest way to get your domain is to do it in the same place that you get your blog hosted. My recommendation for a good place to start is Wealthy Affiliate.

Slow hosting can impact your website’s ranking which you do not want especially if you are planning on monetizing your site. One of the core focal points of Wealthy Affiliate is site speed.

You can rest assured that your WordPress site will always be hosted on the latest and most powerful servers in the world through Amazon hosting.

And they also have a uniquely brilliant “load limiting” process that will monitor your websites and make sure they are always running optimally.

Step 4. Configure and design your site

If this is your first experience blogging, you might be looking at the dashboard and wondering what do you do next. Trust me, it can be overwhelming at first.

Don’t worry – you’ll pick this up in no time and just need a good walkthrough! And as I have said, I recommend you to join Wealthy Affiliate as they have a step by step training that will help guide you with everything you need to know about website building, blogging and more.

They even show you how to market your site through the different social media platform. When I first joined Wealthy Affiliate, I didn’t know much about social media as I feel like it’s a time waster. But not anymore as they can be useful for your site’s promotion.

And Wealthy Affiliate has 24/7 site support that can help you with technical issues about your site, so you will never feel alone and lost during the process at all.

Configuring your blog

Luckily the team at Wealthy Affiliate have put together a great series of tutorials that will help you with becoming used to blogging and building up your website. The training is run by one of the owner, Kyle, who dedicated his time by creating a step by step guide in setting things up to make your blog look and operate just right.

Another one of the most powerful features in Wealthy Affiliate is that it allows you to install and use plugins to get extra functionality on your blog.

Designing your blog

Now, what you’ll want to do is to think about your blog’s design. First impressions count for a lot so you’ll want one that says something about the type of brand you’re trying to create and that helps you stand out in the crowded blogosphere.

As I had mentioned above, Wealthy Affiliate has 3000+ theme which is very easy to set up and have so many to choose from on what design you want. It is better to pick a theme that will complement your niche. Make sure to keep in mind also to always think about your audience in which pick a light colored (preferably white) backdrop to make your content easily readable.

Honestly, when I was a newbie, the design part of setting up a blog is the one I find the hardest. With Wealthy Affiliate, It is definitely possible to do it 100% yourself and there are tutorials built on each theme that will help you learn the skills to do it, all you need is time and patience.

You don’t need to hire a designer to do a custom design for you because you will learn the skills as you go through training which is a big advantage for you plus you’ll save a lot of money.

Don’t stress too much ‘though in the beginning. Somehow, we all started with a design that we later look back on and cringe a little at. The main thing is to get set up and evolve from there.

The most important key is to choose a simple, classic and clean design that you can add a simple logo to make it a bit more personalized and then get on with the blogging!

Step 5. Learn about keyword research

Keyword research in blogging is of great importance. It is what makes visitors/readers find your website content when they are searching for information or if they want an answer to their questions.

So what is Keyword and what are the factors that make keyword very important in blogging?

A keyword is the single word or phrases that are used as a search query. It is a word or a phrase that visitors type on search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

No matter how much content you have, how good of articles you have written, how pretty your website is and how much high paying affiliate links or promotions your website has, but if they are not visible then those are going to be useless.

Researching and choosing the right keyword according to your niche is the right process to attract the right visitors to your website. Keyword research ensures that your website is going to be visible to your audience. The more targeted your Keywords are and the higher the value of the content that you created around those keywords will give you a much higher chance of being on the higher rank of search engine where the audience can easily find you thus your likelihood of getting sales increases.

Knowing where to search for keywords and their rankings is crucial also, personally as a blogger I use Jaaxy as my tool which is very helpful. Jaaxy is another feature in the Wealthy Affiliate platform that enables you to search for the best keywords that will rank and one that will make your website seen by a lot of viewers.

Step 6. Start creating useful content that serves readers

Alright, so now you’ve got your domain, hosting, and have your theme installed. But you’re not a blogger until you start creating some content for your website.

I can’t really tell you what to write on your blog for your first post – because it is something that will vary a lot from blogger to blogger – but as you go along with your training in Wealthy Affiliate you will develop your blogging skills.

Let me offer some insights about content creation.

Content has to serve the main purposes of informing, educating, entertaining, updating or promoting a certain product, business or services. It is, I believe, is the most integral part of your site as this will be the reason viewers will visit your website.

Website Content Writing, therefore, has to be mindful, clear, precise or accurate, organize, relevant and should be able to catch people’s attention so as readers will keep on reading your content for messages to be conveyed, otherwise your content will be useless and will serve no purpose.

Thank you for writing such a detailed article on how to start blogging, in particular the writing part. I agree with everything that you say. It is important that you choose  a niche for which you can write a lot about. The more you write, the more recognition you will obtain. Targeted keywords are very important and will direct you in what to write.

The writing process can be daunting, as it involves turning something in your head to a computer screen, which takes a bit of practice. Once learnt you will get quicker and better.

I thank you for writing this article, as you have made things clearer.

      Hi Antonio,

Thank you for your comment. You are right, the content creation can be daunting which as you said as we practice it can be an easier task.

Thank you again for stopping by. Good luck to you.

    Dear Nida,

This is one of the most excellent and well-detailed posts I’ve read lately on starting a blog.

Being a full-time blogger I often search for information related to blogging and I came across your helpful post. Although I am a full-time blogger still I have taken some helpful insights from your blog.

While creating my content so far I missed one thing which you mentioned “content needs to be entertaining” going forward will focus on that as well while creating my content.

Many people are thinking building a website is rocket science and I was on that list too. When I started I was afraid and thought to build a website needs a lot of skills. As you correctly mentioned nowadays building a website is super easy and it’s a low-level task and we can build a website in less than a minute.

How I wish I had found your article sooner when I first started! I had to go through the old way of trial and errors. For sure your post is going to save many people time and effort. Your post can be used as a blueprint and beginners guide for starting a blog.

    Much Success!

      Hi Paul,

Thank you for your heartwarming comment. I truly appreciate it.

Same here, when I first started in 2009 I thought one has to be at least a computer science graduate or a computer programmer to create a website so I hired someone to build it for me. The only problem ‘though was everytime there are problems or I want to change something I needed to ask him and then pay again.

Knowing the basic and doing it on your own as a blogger is very important and in the long run cost effective.

I wish you all the best.
